DESIGN INDABA 12 - ORDINARY PEOPLE - EXTRAORDINARY IDEAS

The campaign for Design Indaba 12 celebrated ordinary people with extraordinary ideas - we used case studies as the central concept for our campaign to inspire potential delegates to harness their own creativity and posed the question: "What can your creativity do?".

Using a combination of 3-D animation and rapid prototyping technology we created sculptural busts of our designers and their ideas. These images were used in all communication leading up to the event.
+
A light-sensitive poster was developed that in low-light conditions revealed its copy: the story of William Kamkwamba, a Malawian man who built a wind-powered turbine out of scrap parts in order to generate electricity for his house.
+
Magazine advertising featuring Colin Vale, a retired lecturer who invented a paraffin stove that reduces shack fires.

The programme had to detail Design Indaba's order of proceedings, speaker biographies and messaging from sponsors. Examples of extraordinary inventions by untrained individuals were interspersed throughout the programme in the form of lenticular animations. This guaranteed a large degree of interactivity and added weight to our campaign line: What can your creativity do?
